The Future of Work in the Post-Covid World

The Future of Work in the Post-Covid World

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

What a year 2020 has been. Between the Covid pandemic, civil unrest, and the upcoming election in the U.S., it feels as though we've all spent the year bracing for some kind of impact. I'm not going to try to sugarcoat it, there have not been many opportunities for joy, optimism, or celebration this year. But as we have come to learn, all things, good and bad, must come to an end. The question now: what is waiting on the other side? To paraphrase Einstein, in times of disruption, there often lies great opportunity.

In the midst of all the uncertainty swirling around us this year, there has been a shift in the way we work and the way we live our lives. Of course, restrictions are certainly impacting where we can go and who we can see, but still, one might argue that on the other side of this journey, our priorities are going to look a bit different. The game has changed for talent acquisition, as remote work has led to both a wider talent pool, and also, increased competition in the market. If top talent can work anywhere, without the need for relocation, than companies will need to update their approach to talent attraction and retention.

The best companies, and those likely to thrive moving forward, are those that understand that their people are their best resources. We know that in both the recruiting process and in new employee onboarding, providing a top notch, positive experience has lasting impact. It will be interesting to see how companies adjust to hiring and managing talent in the post-Covid world.

For employees and job hunters, I'm hoping that a post-Covid world means that people will realize their value, and advocate for themselves more than ever. Yes, most of us need a steady income to support our lives, but it would be great if we could have a universal mindset shift that allows us to pursue careers that actually let us live and enjoy our lives with the people we love.

This year has illustrated the fact that while the sun rises each day and life goes on, our circumstances can change in an instant, and tomorrow is not guaranteed, at least not in the way that we've grown accustomed to. But on the other side, opportunity awaits, so what do you want to do with it? Now is a great time to start making your plan, setting your priorities and goals, and creating action items to help you get to your desired destination.

In 2020, we had little choice but to hand over the reins, but at some point, it will be time to get back in the driver's seat. So do your research, set your course, and enjoy the ride!
